If you have a preschooler at home, they have probably been sorting objects on their own. For example, sorting their toys by type or color or size. It’s a skill that they will work on at school too. You can help your child practice sorting by size with this free printable.
Why Is Learning to Sort by Size Important?
- Sorting objects by size helps children understand basic math concepts such as comparing, ordering, and classifying. It introduces them to terms like “big,” “small,” “bigger,” and “smaller,” which are foundational for future math skills.
- It enhances their ability to make comparisons and to verbally describe their observations. Such as “this one is larger/smaller than that one.”
- Focusing on small differences in size hones children’s attention to detail, which is important for many learning activities.
- It helps to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills as they figure out how to correctly sort the objects.
