Mickey Colors Complete the Pattern

Completing patterns is an early math skill that is perfect for preschoolers and kindergarteners.

Understanding basic repeating patterns helps prepare children for more advanced math skills as they move through elementary school.

Why Do Children Need to Understand Repeating Patterns?

  1. Understanding and creating repeating patterns helps develop critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and logical reasoning in young children. It helps them recognize and predict sequences of events, which are fundamental skills for mathematical thinking and other areas of learning.
  2. By introducing patterns early on, young children begin to understand foundational concepts such as sequencing, symmetry, and spatial relationships, which are building blocks for later math topics like algebra, geometry, and number sense.
  3. Identifying and extending patterns can help develop their ability to visualize, compare, and manipulate objects, which are important for later activities like reading maps, solving puzzles, and understanding graphs.
  4. By teaching young children to recognize patterns in their environment, such as in nature, music, art, and everyday objects, we help them make connections between math and the real world.

Types of Repeating Patterns

These worksheets focus on two types of patterns, AB and ABB.

AB patterns have only two parts repeating over and over again. An example using colors would be red, blue, red, blue, red, blue, etc.

ABB patterns also have two part repeating over and over again, but in a slightly different way. An example using colors would be red, blue, blue, red, blue, blue, etc.
